IELC is not going green…We are starting green!

With rehab in full swing, we are trying to do our part to be good stewards. Thanks to the wonderful resources of information at Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and Green Piece Indianapolis, we think that we will be able to recycle or donate at least 90% of our building waste. We are tracking it carefully and are setting our goals high. Who says that you need a big budget to be environmentally responsible? No…we don’t have solar panels yet, but who knows one day!

Our goal for environmental responsibility starts with our programs. We will spend as much time as possible outdoors with the children. Whether meandering through the gardens of the IMA or planting flowers in our own garden; we want the children to experience nature first. Appreciation and respect are the direct results of experience. We also will strive to have 90% of our classroom materials re-used or recycled. You know the old saying that kids are always more interested in the box than the toy? Well, we will bring that to life. We believe that high-quality, interesting materials displayed beautifully can inspire children to think creatively as well as (or better than) most of the materials that are purchased at a teacher supply store.
Some of our long-term goals/dreams for the children and our school? A water garden…an organic vegetable garden in our back yard…composting (what child doesn’t love to touch a worm?)…garden projects with the community…the list goes on and on. Have any ideas or want to learn more about other things we are doing? Contact me and let’s exchange ideas! Also, be sure to check out Green Piece Indianapolis (greenpieceindy.com) for quick tips and local events about the “green movement” in Indy.
